THE M’s NEW WING TAKES FLIGHT
What a difference a year makes. Our New Wing is now alive with art, people, and connections—a true reflection of the M’s role as a vibrant, community-driven space where creativity and diverse voices thrive together.
The M has been a place of remarkable inspiration this year. The New Wing’s debut exhibition HERE, NOW: Selections from the M’s Permanent Collection has drawn enthusiastic responses from visitors and media alike. Set under the newly restored Cass Gilbert stained-glass arcade, the galleries have never looked better. And the art now shares a story that’s inclusive and inspiring. All that hard work paid off!
The M hosted two exhibitions in the Nancy and John Lindahl Gallery: Hilo de la Sangre, organized with Grupo Soap del Corazón, and when you’re in the mirror . . . , offering portraits that consider the repercussions of perception. And we transformed the skyways into places of collaboration and public art with El Vaivén from Zamara Cuyun.
Programs, visits, talks, and receptions related to each exhibition brought new energy to the M. We are always establishing relationships with those who live, work, and visit Downtown St. Paul. Art and history lovers alike come to the Pioneer Endicott Building excited to find the M, newly gleaming, bright, and welcoming to all—free of charge.
Above all, the stories and artists with whom we collaborate at the M both inspire and challenge us. Now more than ever, they remind us why this work matters—underscoring our responsibility to tell rich, complex, and dynamic American stories through art. It’s work that takes boldness, and, above all, meaningful relationships.
All that has been built at the M this year is thanks to extraordinary efforts from our staff and volunteers, and the remarkable support of donors, patrons, and visitors. HIGHLIGHT
CELEBRATING A PERMANENT HOME IN THE PIONEER ENDICOTT BUILDING
After a decade-long capital campaign and several years of construction, the M’s New Wing opened to the public October 26, 2024. And what a celebration it was! All weekend long, the galleries were alive and filled with visitors, who marveled at the powerful art installed under the newly restored Cass Gilbert stained-glass arcade.
Thanks to our committed partners, supporters, and donors, this era solidifies the M’s place as a St. Paul institution, the only art museum in Minnesota’s capital city.
Located in the historic Pioneer Endicott Building in downtown St. Paul, the museum’s new galleries more than triple its previous exhibition space to 40,000 square feet.
The M opened its New Wing with HERE, NOW: Selections from the M’s Permanent Collection (October 2024–May 2027), featuring a diverse range of works by iconic American artists, including George Morrison, Paul Manship, Joan Mitchell, and Maria Martinez and local talents such as Leslie Barlow, Julie Buffalohead, Jim Denomie, and Xavier Tavera.
This installation from the M’s permanent collection fulfills a promise for an expanded and increasingly more diverse M. For the first time in history, the museum can present a wide range of artworks in ever-shifting configurations that highlight the collection’s strengths and make unexpected connections across materials and time.
Artists have always been central to the M, which has its origins in 1882 as the Art Workers’ Guild of Saint Paul. Eventually it became a school of art and, in 1927, started a teaching collection for the benefit of art students. In the heart of St. Paul and embracing the creative energy of all the Twin Cities, these galleries highlight both the past and the future, as we grow our community.
The M’s permanent collection is a lasting legacy, continually built and broadened, that renews our understanding of American art made in Minnesota and the Upper Midwest, celebrates old and new artists alike, and broadcasts a strong message: Minnesota is a place where meaningful art has been made for centuries and will continue to be made.

he quality of the M’s permanent collection is strengthened by the thoughtful acquisition of new works that build on the hundreds of meaningful stories the collection tells. In recent years, the M’s Collections Committee has made a dedicated effort to update its collecting guidelines and goals so that the permanent collection best reflects the regional population’s demographic and artistic diversity. The M is the only major art museum in Minnesota to acquire an artwork from the Minnesota State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition every year. The M also aims to acquire at least one artwork from each co-curated exhibition. These priorities acknowledge Minnesota’s deep artistic heritage, drawing on the M’s mission to understand identities, experiences, and complex truths through American art.

THE IMPACT OF CO-CURATION
T
he M’s curatorial model is rooted in creative exchange with artists, culture-bearers, and communities who have strong roots in the Upper Midwest and who have been historically, and presently are, excluded from many American art museums. By prioritizing a community-oriented, artist-forward curatorial process, the M invites an increasingly textured narrative into the museum’s story.

The first major exhibition of permanent collection works in the M’s New Wing, this exhibition brings together 150 artworks across media—paintings, works on paper, sculptures, ceramics, textiles, and jewelry—from historically significant and notable new artists alike. HERE, NOW considers kinship systems and interconnections between artists including George Morrison (Grand Portage, Ojibwe) and Louise Nevelson, Grant Wood and Elizabeth Catlett, Warren MacKenzie and Joan Mitchell. Guest curator Robert Cozzolino with Kylie Linh Hoang, assistant curator, curated this ambitious exhibition with support from Ben Gessner, interim curator and director of exhibitions, and Laura Joseph, former curator and director of exhibitions.

Through every era, convention, and form, portraiture is built on the artist’s perception of both physical and emotional characteristics. To be perceived in this way is exceptionally vulnerable. The relationship between artist and subject influences the intimacy of seeing. A beloved matriarch, for example, might be depicted differently than a model for hire or a romantic interest. Through this relationship, the artist creates something tangible from something abstract. Taking its title from a song lyric on Charli xcx’s album Brat, when you’re in the mirror . . . is an offering of portraits that considers the repercussions of perception through a relational emphasis: Who is depicting whom? And why does that matter?

Curated by Xavier Tavera and Dougie Padilla of Grupo Soap del Corazón, this exhibition brings together 15 Latine visual artists from across the diaspora to consider the significance of blood as a material foundation of life, a carrier of complex lineages, a signal of violence and death, and a cultural and spiritual symbol of sacrifice and atonement. Despite its potency, its concealed fluidity in our bodies helps us disregard its significance. Securian Financial Studio in the Josephine Adele Ford Center for Creativity
Together uplifts mixed-generational creativity by featuring mixed-media artwork from 10 Minnesota artist families of diverse ages and family structures who have created individual and communal work for the exhibition. Artists Emmett and Kit Ramstad conceived this project to elevate children’s artwork and provide a space for parent artists to support each other as they fulfill the roles of parents and artists while raising a new generation of makers. Juniors and seniors from Saint Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists (SPCPA) collaborated with the M and Victory Ramp to create this colorful artwork. For many students, this was their first time painting a mural and participating in the process of creating a large-scale collaborative art piece.

Robert Street Skyway
Zamara Cuyún welcomes members of the public traversing the skyways into a sacred dreamscape based on an actual Maya landscape in Guatemala. A vibrant series of images lead viewers along a continuum of colorful design from warm tones, aimed at energizing the spirit during the cold Minnesota winter, to the cool blues of primordial waters encouraging moments of contemplation and relaxation.

HOW DO VOLUNTEERS LIVE THE M’S MISSION?

ince reopening the M’s doors in November 2023, the museum has operated with substantial support from enthusiastic volunteers. Visitor Experience Manager Kiaan Van Dusseldorp has developed a thriving volunteer program, recruiting and training dozens of volunteers.
Volunteers and staff have conducted 12 group tours of individuals of all ages, interests, and abilities, employing the power of art and the stories it tells to connect, engage, and spread creativity across diverse communities.

Land Acknowledgment
We acknowledge that we are within the traditional territory of the Dakhóta, here in Imni Ża Ska, now known as Saint Paul, a place name that refers to the white bluffs along the river. We recognize that, as a museum in the United States, we have a colonial history and are beneficiaries of this land and its resources. We support efforts toward truth-telling and addressing the harms that continue to impact all indigenous people. We thank the river, which flows just below us.
