Sherin Guirguis: Here I Have Returned
On View: Oct. 3, 2019 – February 23, 2020
Join us for a reception celebrating the opening of a new site-responsive installation for the M’s Rauenhorst Court. Light refreshments will be available.
Egypt-born, L.A.-based artist Sherin Guirguis will fill the M’s Rauenhorst Court with works inspired by Doria Shafik (1908 – 1975), a largely forgotten writer and leader of the Egyptian feminist movement. Shafik organized a “Feminist congress” of 1500 women at the American University in Cairo and stormed the gates of Parliament, demanding that women be given the right to vote and hold public office. Acting as artist, researcher, and historian, Guirguis’s work for the M recovers and safeguards the significance and legacy of this groundbreaking figure. Her installation will include hand-cut works on paper and sculpture, touching on several broad themes within her body of work, including architectural design, craft traditions, language and poetry.
